“We looked at quite a few places before we selected Service Alternatives. The compassion and professionalism is the best, and we will recommend you folks to others.” ~Richard Swymeler
“With other agencies and visiting nurses, I continually had issues with communication and caregivers not willing to do certain tasks or services. Your caregivers do excellent work. They are very reliable and have good communication. They understand my needs. They come in and do what is expected without having to ask me all the time what needs to be done. They go out of their way to do quality work.” ~Betty Tronsrud

The average family caregiver devotes more than 20 hours/week helping their spouse or parent with daily living activities.
Many do more than that. In the United States today, family members provide about 80 percent of the care of the elderly. One person usually becomes the primary caregiver, with siblings and perhaps other relatives and friends lending a hand. In most cases the caregivers are women-a spouse or a daughter, a daughter in law, or a granddaughter. The average duration of her care giving is about 4.5 years.

Employing a home care agency to share in some of those tasks can free up your time and relieve some of the stress of care giving.

It’s best to make a plan for your parent or spouse’s care ahead of time and not when you are in a crisis. You may be able to help your parent or spouse continue to live in their own home far longer than you thought and this is by far the top choice for most people.

Resistance to accepting help is a common cause of stress and depressions among family caregivers. It’s not easy to request help. Some caregivers view it as a sign of inadequacy, or failure. Actually, asking for needed help is just the opposite. Knowing your limits and reaching out for assistance before you reach burn out is a sign of strength. It also helps to ensure the best quality of care for your loved ones.

Care giving from a distance

Care giving from a distance can be even more complicated. Many of us live hundreds of miles away from our aging family members. You may get calls from neighbors or friends who are concerned about your loved one’s health or living situation, but it’s difficult to know what is really happening without being near. You might be driving or flying back and forth during a crisis or coming out for long weekends to help get things stabilized. You will need to organize a local network of supports for when you are not there. Friends and neighbors can be a great resource. Our Home Care agency and geriatric case managers can help arrange for services and make sure that there is always someone there to respond in an emergency.

Ask us for help with home care, community access, general supervision or coordination of services. We are available to respond to your parent or loved one’s needs twenty-four hours a day. We are available over the phone or we can arrange for regular drop-ins to assess how well your loved one is doing. We are happy to answer your questions about home care or other services available to seniors in Western Washington. Call us today for a free-no obligation consultation.
